Main | Program & Session Chairs Announced »

Welcome!

Hi Gang - The site is constructed so that you will be able to see the structure, content and tone of the conference take shape between now and November, 2007. Our next refresh will include the details of registration, call for papers, volunteer participation, sponsorship and more. It is an everyday labor of love and we are excited as the pieces are quickly coming together. Thanks for your interest.

- Parrish
DUX2007 Co-Chair

I'm looking forward to it!

Hi, Thank you all for your efforts to putting this web site together. However, I find it's not really easy for the user to understand labels, navigate the information structure on the home page, and find information. There are some design issues that impact the user experience. The DUX conference is about designing user experience. When we talk about user experience we can't ignore usability. I'm looking forward to seeing improvements in the usability of the web site. Maybe you could do a simple and quick user test to decide where the user has difficulties. Thanks!

Why so many websites related to conferences about usablity, design, user experience, etc, are so badly done?

As the previous comment mentions, the navigation is quite confusing. It is not easy, either, to differentiate text from links, and (please!) don't use those low-contrast colors that are so (annoyingly) popular in the new web2.0 websites; it is so difficult and uncomfortable to read!

Should we be giving a good example on how to do things? Instead of that, we are usually at the end of the queue :-(

What date is the conference? I am also looking forward to it!

This site looked to me like a typical "before it's really built" conference Web site. As a previous attendee, I understood that there would not yet be any solid content yet. And I had fun playing with the moving "links" and the dux logo.

I want to go to this conference but my boss says the website doesn't look professional. Please make a better more professional version.

Monica: I would challenge your boss on their thoughts regarding the manifesto we created for the conference and not the design of one page. I challenge the others who commented to consider the ideas that are being presented not the presentation. The co-chairs and I wish to engage in a dialogue surrounding our changing role in the world given the expectations of consumers to be a part of the design process and in some cases THE designer. This is a seismic shift that will forever redirect our approach to addressing user and business goals.

The site will evolve and change over the next 6 months. What will drive the evolution will be thoughtful debate regarding our point of view and how we, as a design community, will address change.

We hope you will continue to come back and more importantly join in influencing the conference content by authoring a case study.

How closely do submissions have to be aligned with the conference theme?

When will there be a call for papers??? How long are the submissions? Are there long and short papers??

One more question. Who will be reviewing the papers?

We are open to all case studies. The conference theme was established to provide a "true north" or a direction. We can at anytime decide to travel different routes to end up at the same place.

The Submission Tool will be opened within the week.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. But a user experience conference is missing the point if the conference organizers do not care about how much headache the users of its web site have to experience to get the most basic conference information. It's a user experience professional's spirit to pursue the best possible user experience for users, instead of challenging them. This is the basic, in the academia or the industry. By experiencing the really badly designed web site and reading your challenges to other comments asking for improvement, I'm persuaded that the conference is not organized by people really in the user experience field.

A simple metaphor, will you go to a hairdresser who has the worst hair style in the world?

Sorry, my comment above is for Joseph, not Dave. That's another usability problem of this bulletin board -- easy to associate a post with the author of the previous post.

I agree with comments above. In general, the design of a website doesn't materially change my feeling about the site -- UNLESS it's a site about design.

Reminds me of the CHI website. All these talks about user experience, making things easy, etc., yet the directions to the conference venue didn't tell you where to go once you exited off the highway.

Hmm...I thought the CHI website was relatively well done. At least I didn't get a headache from the eye strain of trying to read pale font on a pale background.

"a user experience professional" made a good comment about bad hair on a hair stylist. It's been 3 months since Joseph (co-conference organizer) said that the site would have improvements. Well, not only did I get a headache - which is nicely relieved on this blog - but it took me about 4-5 tries before I figured out how to read the names of the organizers on the support page.

I'm all for innovation and interesting design, but if you're trying to sell me something, it's all about credibility. We all know that, right?

I work in the corporate world where innovation in IT is slow. I would have a very difficult time convincing my supervisor letting me go, based on this site.

I want to believe this is going to be good event, but am having a very difficult time requesting travel and registration fees based on the lack of detailed information and lack of demonstrated usability on this site. As a marketing and design professional, right now I'm searching for some level of credibility - please convince me, as actions DO speak louder than words.
